Top Google Ranking Factors

1. PageRank

PageRank is determined by the number and quality of links to a page. The quantity and quality of text links are very important. Always try to get links from web pages with a PageRank rating of at least four.

Concentrate on getting as many different quality sites as possible to link to one page on your site, usually your home page. Do not spread the links to different pages. This will improve the PageRank of your main page, plus those of the subpages.  Also try reduce your outgoing link as little as possible to prevent Page Rank leakage.

2. Incoming Backlink Keywords

Always provide anchor text links for linking to your site. Avoid image links.

Google does index image links, but without any text for it to index, it won’t help your link popularity rating for your important keywords.

Keywords not researched

Unfortunately too many webmasters do not really bother using any keyword research tools. There are about 4 or 5 of them. Most, like the overture keyword research tool, are free. Many webmasters don’t use them as they know what their site is about and don’t need to research the top keywords. This is a big mistake.

Another big mistake is either optimizing for too niche or too obscure a search term, or going the other way and going for a very broad term with millions of competing pages on a new site with a only a handful of incoming links. Both are common errors and can result in all on page optimisation and off-page optimisation criteria, through requesting links with the wrong link text for example, to be a complete waste of time.

You either get too little traffic as you optimized for terms that are rarely searched for, or you go for the terms with millions of competing pages but you simply do not have the experience or Pagerank to be able to compete. The balance is normally achieved through two or three word phrases in competitive areas and yet don’t have millions of competing pages.

Webmaster Top Mistakes - Search Engine Rankings

Your competitor has a Top 10 ranking for an important keyword, but your company doesn’t even show in the top 100 search results. What is the main reason behind all this?

1. Using the SAME META Tags for all page: This is the most common mistake we see is the use of the same META “Description” and “Keyword” tags on each page. While most search engines do not use the “Keyword” tag, the “Description” tag can help your page ranking and is used by many search engines in the results that are displayed.

2. Poorly Named Title tags: The “Title” tag is the most important element of each page of your site. Look at the title of most “About Us” pages and you’ll usually see something like “About Company ABC” Very less people search using a phrase such as “about company ABC” Instead, use a relevant message from the page for the Title tag,  for example “Largest Online Shop,” and optimize for an important and popular search phrase.

3. Not Enough Relevant Text: Most search engines look for a match between the keyword phrase being searched and the text on your site. They also tend to place a higher priority on the text and keywords located higher on the page. Therefore always make sure you have a theme to each page and optimize the Title tag and page content to reinforce each other.

4. Not All Page are Optimized: Whether your site is 10 or 100 pages, every page of your Web site is a potential search engine entry point. Have a plan for every page and optimize each one for specific keyword phrases.

5. Not Submitting Your URL to Directories and Search Engines: Most of the search engines will find your Web site if it is linked to other sites within its database. But with no or few sites linked to yours, chances are you won’t be crawled unless you submit your URL directly to the site. Most search engines have a “Suggest a URL” link on their home page.

6. Lack of Backlinks: Most companies spend minimal time and resources on gaining links from other sites, yet it is one of the most important elements in many search engine algorithms, including Google. Make sure your company is listed on all the major directories, industry-specific directories and portal sites, your partners and clients as appropriate, and other sites. Secondly, expand the content on your site, including the development of “resources information,” and seek reciprocal links from other sites.

7. Too Much Focus on the Keywords Meta Tag: Check out the Keyword Meta Tag on most Web site pages and you’ll see a long list of words and phrases, including the name of the company CEO, product names, etc. The problem: Almost all of the search engines actually don’t use this tag, but they do look at the keywords in your Title tag and page content, and a few look at the Description Meta tag.

8. No sitemap: Make a sitemap for your homepage to let search engine spider to crawl your website easier.

9. Low/High Keyword Density: While the use of keyword density in the search engine algorithms seems to be changing and waning in importance, it should not be ignored. Keyword density that is too low suggests that the page may not be as relevant as another, yet too high and your page is considered SPAM by most and will be penalized in the ranking.

10. Massive Use of JavaScript, Flash and Frames: Search engine spider cannot crawl page with frames and those spider cant collect data from javascript and flash images. Therefore try dont put important content in frames, flash, and javascript.

Domain Names - Use Hyphen or Not ?

Url’s without hyphens do look more professional. Hyphens are typically ok in certain contexts but when you start stringing them out with more than three words or three phrases it can get cumbersome. And we all know the attention span of an internet browser. Hyphenated domain names work with targeted keyword campaigns and search engine spiders. If that is the purpose of the sight or domain then the hyphens are fine. If your marketing intention is to create a brand, a remembered domain name, top of mind awareness with the domain then hyphenless domains work best.

The general rule of thumb is to not use hyphens between words if possible. A domain name with hyphens is harder to describe when said aloud as in our radio commercial. It is commonly accepted that a domain name with multiple words does not include hyphens. But there are exceptions to the rule. With some popular domain names not being available, sometimes a hyphenated url will be and will be used.

The Advantages of Per-Unit Computations

Making computations for electric systems in terms of per-unit values simplifies the work greatly. A real appreciation of the value of the per-unit method comes through experience. Some of the advantages of the method are summarized briefly below :

1. Manufacturers usually specify the impedance of a piece of apparatus in percent of per unit on the basis of the nameplate rating.

2. The per-unit impedances of machines of the same type and widely different rating usually lie within a narrow range, although the ohmic value differ materially for machines of different ratings. For this reason when the impedance is not known definitely, it is generally possible to select from tabulated average values a per-unit impedance which will be reasonably correct. Experience in working with per-unit values brings familiarity with the proper values of per-unit impedance for different types of apparatus.

3. When impedance in ohms is specified in an equivalent circuit, each impedance must be referred to the same circuit by multiplying it by the squire of the ratio of the rated voltages of the two sides of the transformer connecting the reference circuit and the circuit containing the impedance. The per-unit impedance, once expressed on the proper base, is the same referred to either side of any transformer.

4. The way in which transformers are connected in three-phase circuits does not affect the per-unit impedances of the equivalent circuit although the transformer connection does determine the relation between the voltage bases on the two sides of the transformer.

The Three-Phase Generator

Three-phase generators have three sets of windings and thus produce three ac voltages instead of one. The three-phase generator has three induction coils placed 1200 apart on the rotor (armature). Since the three coils have an equal number of turns, and each coil rotates with the same angular velocity, the voltage induced across each coil will have the same peak value, shape, and frequency.

The Y-Connected Generator

If the three terminals (denoted N) of the three windings are connected together, the generator is referred to as a Y-connected three-phase generator. The point at which all the terminals are connected is called the neutral point. If a conductor is not attached from this point to the load, the system is called a Y-connected, three-phase, three-wire generator. It the neutral is connected, the system is a Y-connected, three-phase, four-wire generator.

Phase Sequence (Y-Connected Generator)

The phase sequence can be determined by the order in which the phasors representing the phase voltages pass through a fixed point on the phasor diagram if the phasors are rotated in a counterclockwise direction. The phase sequence can also be described in terms of the line voltages. In this case, the sequence can be determined by noting the order of the passing first or second subscripts.

Three Phase Analysis and Power Calculation

Three-phase systems differ from single-phase systems in that they use a set of three voltages instead of one. Three-phase systems are used for the generation and transmission of bulk electric power. To get single-phase ac from a three-phase system, we simply tap off one of its phases. Three-phase systems may be balanced or unbalanced. If a system is balanced, it can be analyzed by considering just one of its phases. Since most systems operate close to balance, many practical problems can be dealt with by assuming balance. Three-phase systems posses economic and operating advantages over single-phase systems.

Superconductors

Superconductivity materials lose all resistance and exclude external magnetic fields when they become superconducting. The temperature at which they become superconducting is known as transition or critical temperature Tc. At temperature above Tc the resistance of the material is not zero.

In like manner the magnetic field strength at which a superconducting material loses its superconductivity is the critical field. A useful superconductor has a high critical temperature and field. In January 1987 superconductivity critical temperature of a compound of yttrium, barium, and copper oxide was found to be about 90o K. This is above the temperature of liquid nitrogen, which boils at 77o K. Higher critical temperatures have been reported, but have not been reliably reproduced yet. The new superconducting compounds are brittle, but have been drawn into fine wires. Superconducting materials found so far show promise for electronic devices. Much work remains to be done before they can be used for superconducting transmission lines.
Short experimental superconducting lines have been built and operated, but have not yet been shown to be economical.
