Repair Random Computer Freezing and Rebooting

This is a solution to fix most of the common computer freezes and reboot at random intervals.

This guide works perfectly for Windows 98/XP/NT/Vista.

Solution:
Update your Windows Operating System. Install the latest service packs to fix all serious and minor errors in operating system.

Update all device drivers for all your hardware and chipsets. Driver issues, especially for video drivers, are a common cause of system crashes.

Scan for viruses, malware, spyware. Download spyware doctor to remove all unwanted spywares and malware.

Remove all PCI cards & plugs and put them back.

Test your RAM for bad and damaged RAM.

Test your HDD for errors. Click Start -> My Computer. Right-click the disk you want to check. Select Properties. Click on the Tools tab. Under Error Checking, click Check Now. Select the Automatically Fix File System Errors option, and the Scan For and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors option. Click on Start.

Defragment your hard drives. Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter.

Ensure that system temperatures are not reaching critical levels. Overheating of processors and computer chipsets can also cause problems. Consider using a good CPU cooler from here

Ensure your power supply is adequate to the needs of your system. If you have purchased a bare bones system to save a few bucks, and have added new components over time such as extra hard disks, video cards, CPU cooler and these add-ons may require higher rating of power supply to handle it. Determine the wattage rating on the power supply in your computer.

Try to recall any changes you have made to your system. New hardware or software will sometimes cause conflicts, creating problems where none previously existed. If you begin having issues and can pinpoint their occurrences to a time immediately after a change was made to your system, the new hardware/software may be the problem.

Clean the registry. This tool will scan and repair your registry.

Thanks for sharing. I have used some of the tricks you mentioned…but not all. You learn something every day :)
I am investigating a new case of PC freeze (brand new PC) and I haven’t found a solution yet. I scanned it for viruses and spyware, I removed some startup programs from the list and defragmented it.
Do you think a bad power supply could be the cause? Also, the only thing I have left to do is repair XP installation.
