Reinstall DirectX 9.0c
Use this method unless your DirectX installation is messed up. This method will force your winxp to reinstall to the original version of your DirectX.
To remove DirectX Do the following:
1. Start > Run > regedit
2. Browse to and remove the following key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectX”
3. Do not delete any of the other folders or your PC wont work. Restart your computer and if you did above, DirectX 9 will be gone, and XP will have reinstalled 8.1 in the background on restart.
4. Confirm by doing the following:
Start > Run > dxdiag
This will open your directx diagnostic tool, containing a wealth of info. On the first tab, down the bottom it will tell your your directx version. Should now say DirectX 8.1
XP ships with DirectX 8.1 as ppart of the OS. DirectX 9 has a habit of not installing correctly if you have Anti-Virus Runnig, or if you are doing the install with the online installer on a dial up connection.

Hello,
I haven’t really tested this tutorial but some people have gotten in trouble because of these registry altarations. Might I suggest that you encourage people to create a backup of the registry first, so that in case of problems they can reset it?
